Epilepsy is an increasingly prevalent condition among elderly patients. Up to 50% of first-time seizures have been found to occur in people over the age of 65 years, and nearly 25% of those with epilepsy are elderly. However, despite the pervasiveness of this condition among senior populations, surveys of clinicians and senior-care pharmacists suggest a deficiency in knowledge regarding proper utilization of antiepileptic drug (AED) therapy. Moreover, recent interviews with clinical experts revealed a number of barriers to optimal epilepsy care in the elderly, including diagnosis and treatment delays, underuse of newer AEDs, and presence of comorbidities, drug–drug interactions, and acute and long-term side effects.
It is imperative that consultant and senior care pharmacists be prepared to address these barriers in their elderly patients. Taking steps to tailor epilepsy therapy to this specific patient population will likely improve patient care in elderly individuals with epilepsy.

Upon completion of this knowledge-based educational activity, the participant should be able to:
Explain the challenges associated with AED polypharmacy when managing older adults with epilepsy.
Develop individualized treatment plans for older patients based on a multi-disciplinary approach.
