Program Description

Colorectal cancer is the third most common cause of death from cancer in the United States, leading to more than 50,000 deaths annually. About one-quarter of patients with colorectal cancer present with metastatic disease at the time of diagnosis and about 50% to 60% of patients with colorectal cancer will eventually develop metastatic disease. Clinical advances have led to better patient outcomes in patients with metastatic colorectal cancer, including the potential for longer-term survival in some patients. However, the availability of multiple treatment options adds to the complexity of developing optimal treatment approaches for each individual patient. Medical oncologists play a key role in ensuring that patients with metastatic colorectal cancer achieve the best possible outcomes. The goal of this continuing medical education activity is to expand the ability of clinicians to select new approaches based on current evidence to optimize outcomes in their patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.

Target Audience

This activity is intended for medical, surgical, and radiation oncologists as well as pathologists, gastroenterologists, nurses, physician assistants, and other healthcare providers interested and involved in the treatment of patients with colorectal cancer.

Learning Objectives

Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:

  1. Integrate optimal evidence-based cytotoxic and targeted therapies into individualized treatment plans for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
  2. Summarize recent changes to clinical practice guidelines for the treatment of metastatic colorectal cancer.
  3. Explain which biomarker tests are beneficial in guiding treatment selection for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
  4. Outline the role of angiogenesis inhibition in improving outcomes for patients with metastatic colorectal cancer.
