The management of T2DM remains a major challenge as many patients continue to struggle with achieving therapeutic targets, including control of A1c levels, LDL cholesterol, and blood pressure. Glucagon-like peptide 1 (GLP-1) receptor agonists, one of the newer drug classes for the treatment of T2DM, may offer beneficial effects on cardiovascular risk factors. This activity will examine the use of GLP-1 receptor agonists to reduce cardiovascular risk.
This educational activity is designed to meet the needs of primary care physicians and other clinicians who diagnose and manage patients with type 2 diabetes.
Upon completion of this educational activity, the participant should be able to:
- Describe the clinical/therapeutic implications of cardiovascular comorbidities in patients with T2DM.
- Describe the effects of GLP-1 receptor agonists on cardiovascular risk factors, including lipids, blood pressure, and body weight.
- Outline differences among T2DM therapies regarding their effects on cardiovascular risk factors.
